We used to think he meant, "Even if only a few of you gather I am still there." We now tend to think he meant, "When just two or three gather in my name, I am there in a special kind of way." In other words, the basic building block of the church is the small group in which the members are committed to one another as to Christ. We tend to think of the small group as only being a part of the church. The New Testament does not make this distinction. It is the church.
Calvary Lutheran Church is a church of small groups. Small groups of people meet in homes or here at church throughout the week for the purpose of building relationships, encouraging one another, learning together and praying for one another. It's a great place to explore, ask questions, and grow. Each small group may or may not be led by a small group leader. The groups may be organized around location, stage of life, marital status, special interests, and other needs. You can choose the group that you want to be part of based on your own interests, availability, and affinity with the other people in the group. Or you may wish to start your own group, depending upon your needs. Each group decides when & where they meet & how often. They may meet weekly, every other week, or monthly.
Here at Calvary, we also engage in occasional church-wide small group emphases. Some of our past emphases have included Rick Warren’s 40 Days of Purpose and 40 Days of Community, as well as our own Let the Worship Begin and, in 2008, Bruce Bugbee & Don Cousins’ Network, where participants explored their individual spiritual gifts and how they can be used within the church to further God’s kingdom. The resources named and many others are available for discussion & study. Our pastor or office staff can help you find one suitable for your group. Or, if you prefer, feel free to browse our small group resource library located in Calvary’s A/V media room. The A/V media room is also available for small groups meetings. Check with the church office for availability.
